Virginia State Contractor License Regulations

To perform construction work in Virginia, you will need a license or certificate from the Virginia Board for Contractors. You can get an application from the Department of Professional and Occupational Regulation,or call (804) 367-8511.

To become a certified contractor you must pass a business and law exam, and depending on the trade you are interested in you may also need to pass a trade exam. The board issues three types of contractor's licenses. The value of the contracts your business will work on determines the type of license you will receive. Virginia Workers' Compensation Commission,804-367-9740, will assist you with the compliance of insurance requirements. Every contractor is required to pass the OSHA exam.

Out-of-State Corporations must get a Certificate of Authority to do business within the state, to apply:Corporations Commission or call (804) 371-9733.
